Overcoming a bad relationship can be particularly difficult for a man or a woman. It can be hard to forget about a previous partner's bad habits or harmful behaviours. Fortunately, there are several steps a person can take to start a healthy new relationship after a particularly bad one. Tips on how to start a new relationship after a particularly bad break up include forgetting, thinking positively, and keeping an open mind.

1. Forget about it

A person cannot move on to a new relationship without forgetting about the previous one, so make sure to take enough time off after a bad relationship to forget about it thoroughly. This may take weeks, months or even years depending on how long the previous relationship lasted. Moving into a new relationship too quickly is not fair to the other person, who may unknowingly have to deal with the effects of the previous relationship.

2. Forget about the other person

This means deleting his or her phone number, not compulsively checking their Facebook page, and not e-mailing them. Stop communicating with the person. This may be hard at first, but it is the only way to truly separate from a past partner.

3. Think positively

A person's last one, two or three relationships might have turned sour; this may make it easy to believe that all relationships are doomed from the start. Going into a new relationship with this mindset, however, spells disaster. The key to any good relationship is positive thinking and behaviour. Keep an open mind about a person on the first several dates, and do not rush to judgement about any of their thoughts or actions, even if they may seem to mimic those of past partners'.

4. Do different activities

If a person always used to go to the movies with an ex boyfriend or girlfriend on Friday nights, he or she should not choose this activity with future partners. This will only bring back old memories, causing the person to subconsciously compare partners. Instead, try new activities; trying an activity neither partner has experienced before will forge new bonds.

5. Do not constantly refer to past partners

Constantly talking about an ex boyfriend or girlfriend can give the new person a bad impression. He or she may start to think that you are still not over a past relationship. Also, no one wants to be compared to another person he or she probably does not even know. Instead, focus on character traits in a new partner that are original and unique.
